Graduate Programs

Many opportunities exist for students who wish to earn a PhD in Microbiology at UC Berkeley. There are three independent graduate programs to which prospective students in microbiology can apply.

Microbiology

The Microbiology program is centered in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology in the College of Natural Resources. Interdepartmental in nature, the program serves students interested in all aspects of microbiology. Areas of emphasis include, microbial ecology, mycology, and plant pathogen interactions. This medium-sized program allows students access to all the microbiology labs in Infectious Disease and Molecular and Cell Biology.

Infectious Disease and Immunity

For those students interested in microbial pathogenesis, the Program in Infectious Diseases and Immunity provides an opportunity to obtain a Ph.D. degree that is unique in emphasizing integrated, multi-disciplinary training in host-pathogen-environmental interactions.

Molecular and Cell Biology

MCB, matriculates approximately fifty students per year, is the largest of the biology departments on campus. This program is best suited to students with broad interests in biology who wish to benefit from the diversity of scientific study. The department's strengths include biochemistry, structural biology, immunology, and microbiology.
